A Knitter's Day in Petaluma
Wednesday, 22 September 2010 16:27

This Saturday, I had the rare pleasure of a little me-time. I have been wanting a massage since the day I gave birth to the munchkin nearly nine months ago. There were opportunities, but something always came up. Finally, I was able to schedule a massage with my friend Angelique, who has a studio in downtown Petaluma on Water Street. She has a small studio, very cozy in an unassuming spot and tastefully decorated. The massage was great -just the right amount of pressure, plenty of communication, but not too much. Plus, it was nice to get a massage and not have to deal with all the spa stuff -the locker, the product selling, the other guests etc. I highly recommend Angelique and will be happy to pass along her contact details if you request them.

chasingrainbowsA trip to Petaluma wouldn't be complete without a trip to Knitterly. I don't care how relaxed I was from the massage, if I'm in Petaluma, I'm going to Knitterly, no doubt about it and this trip did not disappoint. There was a sale bin outside with some beautiful silk/wool blend that would make a great pair of fingerless mitts, dyed by Chasing Rainbows dyeworks in Mudcloth (see left).

I asked someone (possibly the owner) at Knitterly where I should go to lunch, something Italian that wasn't too expensive, but wasn't too cheap and she quickly recommended Sugo, which was outstanding. OUTSTANDING. I splurged on a glass of wine, the Verdure pasta, which was a penne pasta with ribbons of zucchini, asparagus and mushrooms in a tangy pesto cream sauce, and the beet salad. It was tasty, comforting and indulgent and worth every calorie. The food was well executed and satisfying. Viewing the website, the owners/chefs were working while I enjoyed my lunch. It was enjoyable watching people put so much care into their work. You could tell that they and their staff were passionate and it was reflected in the food. I would go back and take friends in a heartbeat.

If you're a knitter in the bay area on a budget and you need a little day trip to soothe yourself and placate your yarn addition, you could do a lot worse than a visit to Petaluma.

Chez KnitLuck - What's On the Needles
Wednesday, 22 September 2010 14:20

Chez Knitluck, we're saying goodbye to summer. But the season is not the only thing changing. I'm entering my final weeks as an employed person. I'm still on the lookout for a job, but it's tough out there. This means there's a lot of work to do. Projects at work to finish, resumes to send out. It also means I won't be posting as vigilantly as normally, at least not until the first week of October. I'll still be posting, but there might be more intervals between posts.

That said, I'm really enjoying working on this website and adding "enhancements" as they say in Jane Austen novels. Stay tuned.

All that aside, I'm doing a lot of knitting around here:
Teaching myself how to knit a toe-up sock:

Knitting an Aston Hat (pdf) and trying to spin, with special emphasis on the trying. I've been spinning the fibers that Lamina the Great sent me last year. I really need to go through her tutorial again!

Oh, see those two balls of blue tweed? They're for the winner of the final round of the logo contest. You guys should know that I chose H!

Knit Luck Links
Wednesday, 22 September 2010 07:21

pintsocks01It's Wednesday! The week is halfway done! Here are some knitting links to get you through the week.

Go Knit in Your Hat has a lovely essay about the road less taken, or choosing a life of yarn over a life of law. I found it inspiring as my current job comes to an end.

I just realized that you can see how various knitting publication are rated at Jimmy Bean's Wool. Disagree with that the reviewers have to say? Go rate the magazine yourself -it will help knitters with their purchasing decisions.

I also found LilyGo who designs crocheted lace shawls. I imaged that they're much, much faster to make than the knitted ones.

While the federal government says that the recession is over, the rest of us in the real world know we're still suffering from the effects of it. Phyllis Aberici takes a moment to see how the economic downturn has affected knitters and their buying habits. It's interesting to read the comments on this one.

Also Samurai Knits has a "Call to Wallets" to support instructors from the UK Knit Camp, many of whom have not yet been paid for their services. She has links to the whole story behind the problems at UK Knit Camp.

Last, but by no means least, Spilly Jane Knits, designer of the gnome socks (who is still having a pattern sale) is designing a pint glass sock, beautiful socks with little pint glasses on them -for those home-brewers out there!

Happy Knitting!

Finished Object Made of Awesome - Rose Kim Knits
Tuesday, 21 September 2010 21:28

We have another finished object made of awesome! I've been reading Rose Kim Knits for a long time. She's one of the most prolific knitters out there and I'm totally envious of her output. She is also master of the knitting blog post, blogging regularly with interesting content that's picture-heavy and just the right length. I look forward to her posts popping up in my reader.

Today she has a finished Clamber made with medium-weight socks that rock. It looks like that yarn was created just to make the hat. Gorgeous.

visit Rose Kim Knits to read more. Oh, and you can see the progress of the hat in one of the previous posts.
