Teaching Knitting Will Help The Economy
Monday, 30 March 2009 09:39

It seems to me that a lot of people are visiting the pledge site, but not actually making the pledge. I know it's tough out there. A lot of us are working our tails off to stay afloat in the economy. We have obligations to our families and friends. And I know it sounds funny, using knitting to save the economy? But, I believe it and here's why.

Saving our economy is not just about spending more money. A lot of Americans are angry, for a variety of reasons. We're angry that our tax dollars are being spent to bail out banks and not so much to help hurting homeowners. We're angry that health problems are not adequately covered by health insurance and are bankrupting us. We're angry that these budget shortfalls are hurting our childrens educations. And these are BIG problems, and problems that one person alone can't fix. Which brings me to my point, we need communities to fix our problems, we have to come together and work as teams. We need to be there for our fellow neighbors. Being there for each other will raise the morale that our world so badly needs. But sometimes it's hard to become engaged in a community.

This is where knitting comes in.

I can directly attribute my learning to knit to good things coming into my life.

  • a sense of inner peace and accomplishment
  • raised self esteem
  • a strong inner circle of friends
  • a life partner
  • a new career
  • a pursuit that never ceases to entertain and center me.

Think about what knitting has done for your life. Sure it's possible that what it's done for you, knitting won't neccesarily do for your friends, but I think it's worth the risk, the risk of a short period of your time to teach for the potential of so much to gain.

So join the pledge. Teach one person to knit. Document it. Blog it. Let's see where this goes.

Thanks,

KnitLuck

Sharing Sunday
Sunday, 29 March 2009 10:50

A productive Sunday. I have done my taxes. I'm going to go clean out my car, but not before I share some links of a more personal nature. Things that I like that you might like. Artists that make me smile. Happy Spring.

I've long been a fan of block printing and I want to paper my walls with her work. I want to get a tattoo inspired by her Return print. You can purchase posters, cards, etc from buyolympia.org.

298203085_4f01b14e9e_mThe LadyCartoonist's site is down, but here is an example of something she's working on that makes me smile. She once drew a sketch of me knitting, which I need to scan and put on the site. You can see a flickr feed of her work here.

I may have shared this before, but I adore BrainyLady's finished lace project photos. They keep me on track with my laceknitting.

Also, the pledge to teach others to knit (or crochet, spin etc) to help the economy continues! We have two three people who have signed up. I need eight seven more to fulfill the pledge. I'm hoping to get sponsors to offer prizes for the participants. And I'm actually hoping to get more than 10 total pledges because I truly believe that this will do some good for the knitting community and society at large. I want to prove that education will indeed help save the economy! So become a part of it! If you have an online craft shop, donate a prize and I will feature you on the site. I myself am donating some primo yarn from my stash! This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
