The Best Knitting Tutorial for Geeks - The Starfleet Academy Knitting Tutorial
Fried Gold
Written by Angela Pallatto Hockabout

safaslogoNow this is a little piece of knitting fried gold. It's the Star Fleet Academy's Fiber Arts Society's knitting tutorial and it teaches knitting from the perspective of someone who may have never been to the planet Earth. It's genious in its simplicity. As a big Star Trek dork, this completely brightened my day and I hope it does yours.

Apparently, it's Star Fleet Academy week!

Thanks to Ontd_startrek for the link :D

Oakland's Knitting Pin Up Calendar
Fried Gold
Written by Angela Pallatto Hockabout

So maybe the mainstream doesn't think of knitting as sexy. Most people still conjure up the image of old grandmas with knitting needles whenever they think of a knitter, but that's not so anymore! Oakland area knitters are producing a knitting pin up calendar, Off the Needles: A Knitting Pinup Calendar (presumably for all of the video game nerds out there -what better partner for a knitter than a video gamer? Both can sit on the couch and enjoy their hobbies together, at least until the knitter converts them into another knitter)

The Gray Lady Artist Collective could use your help. They need to raise $3000 to be able to photograph and print the calendar. Make a donation and you'll be able to receive a calendar. Plus, there's room for 11 ad spaces.

Oakland Local has an interview with Stephanie Whiteside to find out more about the project.

See the project on Kickstarter.

Scott Pilgrim Knitting

If you saw the Scott Pilgrim Movie, then you'll know that there are some excellent handknits that every knitter was thinking about during the film. So here you go, some Scott Pilgrim knitting goodness.

There were really only two, just this sweater and scarf:
(if you find more, let me know in the comments)

Ramona5Ramona7

Ramona's hooded v-neck looks like it might be knitted in a worsted mohair. The Knives striped scarf looks to be a simple stockinette scarf without selvedge -just alternate black and white every 5-6 inches and make it really long.

Here are some sweater patterns found on Ravelry that might serve as a good basis for the Ramona Flowers sweater:

Pullover by Submlime Yarns (best match)
109-1 Jumper with hood in Eskimo
by Drops Design (close match)
Terra by Jacquelyn Landry
Corona by Canary Sanctuary

There seems to be a lot of discussion about Scott Pilgrim knitting over at Ravelry.

Laura Jean Shannon was the costume designer behind the film and has an interview with Laura deCarufel from the Torontoist Style Notebook.

Oh and in case you wanted Ramona's hair, but without the hairdye... try the Hallowig!

Pride Knitting - Yay They Ruled Against Prop 8!

knittinggaytopsIn what turned out to be a crazy week for my personal life, the news about Judge Walker striking down Prop 8 was a bright shiny light of hope. I wanted to celebrate by highlighting gay knitters out there:

Queer Joe's Knitting Blog
Joe knits a mean lace shawl, spins his own yarn and makes you laugh about all things reality tv. This one is added to google reader :)

Knitting Gay Tops
It's not what you think. A knit-kit from Etsy Seller myattictreasures.

RobStrauss had a lovely idea over at Men Who Knit for a Gay Knitting Cruise.

The Octopus and the Rose has "The Knitted Response to Homophobia".
Reading Benjamin's story of being harrassed on a simple night out with his friends reminds one that the world still has a lot to learn about tolerance. He mentions some beautiful ways that people are responding to homophobia. He has recently moved his blog to pins and tentacles.

Android Apps for Knitters and Yarn Addicts
Fried Gold

One of the first things I did when I got my DroidX was visit the android marketplace to see what kind of apps they had for knitters. Sadly, it's small pickings there and honestly, I've barely used the apps I've downloaded.

Ravulous is the first knitting app to use the Ravelry API. Right now, you can only view and edit your current projects. This is good if you just want to quickly update as your knitting, or if you want to show a friend what you've been working on.

knittingcalcchartKnitting Calculator is a bit simplistic, but still worth the .99 British Pounds to purchase for those random times you need to know whether you have enough yarn for a project. It has inputs for the yarn that the pattern requires, and then you input the total yards per ball/skein of the yarn you wish to use. Voila, you have the word as to whether or not you have enough yarn. Handy to have in a pinch.

(scan the box using your android camera to download)

Yaryarnshopperchartn Shopper is another nifty android app for knitters. It's 1.50 for the non-ad version. You can keep track of the knitting projects you wish to knit, adding the required yardage and yarn weight and Yarn Shopper will tell you which yarns would work for the project, how many you would need and the total cost to buy the yarn. This app would be the knitter's holy grail if you could actually purchase the yarn as well. Here's another, more detailed review from Nicole Torres at Absolutely Android.

tallybeechartTally Bee is another cool thing to have on hand, it's basically a simple counter that one could use for anything, but for knitters it turns your android phone into a very expensive row counter :). I wish you could save and name multiple counts for different projects.

Knit Cards seemed like a cool app, but I didn't enjoy the prospect of re-entering projects that I had in ravelry into a wholly different app. I'm just going to wait for Ravelry to come out with their own app.

Speaking of coming out with apps, I'm looking for a simple android app for KnitLuck. Are there any developers out there who could help me out?

Rhinebeck, NY hasn't seen this much action since the Fiber Festival. Chelsea Clinton is putting us to shame. Next year, we have to make a much bigger fuss.
