I don't know if this happens to you, but it's not all that often that I complete a piece of epic knitting (well, epic for me anyway). And this cardigan was a journey 18 months in the making, so now that it's finished I'm sort of stuck. Unlike those who end up with start-itis, I really don't want to knit much. I did have some pangs of start-itis. I found myself scanning the pages of ravelry's pattern search to find my next great cardigan only to realize that I had already cast one on back in March. Yeah, I heard you Dahlia Cardigan, I will get back to you in a little while. I just want to enjoy this finished sweater feeling a little bit longer.

Don't get me wrong, a pair of socks is finally getting a little bit of love. I'm so behind on my Christmas sock knitting. I'm hoping to get this pair done so that I can focus on the second pair next month. I'm going to knit another pair of socks using the last skein of Little Red Bicycle that I have in my stash. If I could justify adding to my sock yarn stash I would buy up all of the Little Red Bicycle yarn for sale on Ravelry, but alas I am trying to downsize. The devil sitting on my shoulder reminds me that they're not making this yarn anymore and that is a good reason to buy more of it. We'll see. If you have any Little Red Bicycle yarn you wish to sell, you know who to bother ;). Heck if I knew anything about dying yarn I would try to buy the dye recipes.

It doesn't help that little life changes are making me put knitting on the back burner. My older son starts his preschool next week. It's a coop preschool so I am required to do quite a bit of work along with the other parents so there are going to be more demands on my time. I have to make sure that Nate gets to school on time, properly dressed with a healthy snack. I also have to make sure I have proper babysitting for my youngest whenever I have to work in the school. When new things pop up in my life I have this tendency to sit back to allow myself to get used to the changes. Sometimes this even means my knitting, especially when my knitting projects all have new phases to them. I have to turn the heel on the socks, I have to caston a different section of the Dahlia Cardigan. For some reason I'm hesitant to tackle these things when I'm getting used to a new routine.

Did I mention that I also started yoga? I've needed a little routine in my life and going to yoga has done the trick. I've long needed the exercise. It's nice to have another way to reconnect. Speaking of which, I've decided to attend a knitting retreat in 2014 in California. Does anyone have any good recommendations (besides Stitches and Knitting Lab)?

And that's what's going on Chez Knit Luck.

I'm knitting lace. What the hell am I thinking?

Actually the lace bit on the Dahlia cardigan isn't too terrible. In fact I've eschewed knitting just about anything else since casting on. The poor Shakespeare Cardigan has been long neglected. Maybe I'll pull that out tonight to give it a little love.

Mood: Happy that the rainy weather is coming back.

Shakespeare Cardigan by Pam Grushkin, photo by Tahki Stacy Charles
It took a long while, but I finally found a sweater to knit with the infamous Jo Sharp Aran Tweed that I frogged last year. I picked the Shakespeare Cardigan, which is a free pattern from Tahki Stacy Charles. They have a lovely tweed that they designed this for, but it will suit our needs for now.

I know I had picked some other sweaters before, but I never cast them on because they didn't feel right and I wasn't about to spend another four months knitting the wrong sweater again. Then of course there was this problem where I couldn't get gauge no matter what needles I used. It was a little disappointing to pick a sweater only to have it not work out in the gauge process.

Then I finally found the Shakespeare Cardigan, but it took a while to commit to this pattern because I was uncertain about the 1x1 rib, which encompasses most of the knitting. That kind of ribbing can be a pain on the hands especially since I don't knit continental and don't have the brainspace to learn it. Thankfully, the 1x1 rib wasn't so terrible and I'm actually enjoying it.

Is it official? Has my sweater knitting mojo has returned? I feel as good knitting this as I did my first tweed cardigan, which was the Central Park Hoodie. Is that what knitting mojo is supposed to be? The confidence that whatever you're knitting will turn out right. If so, then I've got it back, baby!

Have you ever lost your knitting mojo? Tell me all about it, I've been there!

New Knitting Bag

One of my closest friends treated me well this Christmas and gave me my new favorite handbag. It's a quilted bag in all of my favorite colors. It's super simple, no fancy pockets on the inside, but it sits on my shoulder just right and it matches what I usually wear. I love this bag so much that I want my friend to make a bunch of them to sell. I know that there are knitters out there that don't like to sew (just like me) and there aren't that many knittng bags in the $50 and under price point.

What do you think? Do you have room in your life for another knitting bag?

The Last Days of 2012

It's been a busy couple of months. I know this now because things have finally quieted down and I can think back to the Spring which was the last time it was sort of sedate chez knitluck. Since July we've been dealing with one one thing or another whether it was Burning Man, recovering from Burning Man, building a new website, planning Thanksgiving and coping with the general craziness of the holidays, not to mention children's birthday parties and an upcoming mommy knitting retreat. I'm here to give stay at home mom a whole new meaning. Mostly that I will stay at home with the children and do a whole heap of kooky things.

Like knitting.

Here's photographic proof of the mitered square blanket:

I finished one of the Cosmic Dawn Socks:

Knitting as ever has been a sense of calm for me. More than that, a sense of joy and has brought me many friends over the past two years. That has been the big thing about 2012, using knitting to expand my horizons, or bringing knitting to others to help them. I'd like to continue that. Thank you to Tamara, Bina, Alex, Robin, Renee, Cara, Poppy, Tink, Monty, Danielle, Jacqui, Jonsi, Julie, Josh, Chris, Nate, Liam, Mom, Dad, Victor, Grandma, Mama E for a terrific year.

And Knit Luck readers, I'd like to thank you because you keep coming back here.

Hope you have a happy new year and that 2013 makes your dreams come true because that's what I'm doing, making my big dreams come true.

Happy Knitting xKnitLuck
